Snooker in November 2011

19:06:00 Ramona Dragomir 0 Comments

It's November and it's going to rain with snooker events
Do you hear it? That "bzzzzzzzz" sound? Well, that's because in November we will be some very busy bees. Yes, sir! It will practically rain with tournaments, one after another and the big news is that at the end of the coming month we shall find our who is this year's Premier League champion.

But until the fast and furious competition will reach its final stages the snooker caravan has to make three more stops, on November 3, 10 and 17. Then during 26 and 27 of November the semi-finals and the final will take place, as usual in Norfolk.

Returning to the beginning of the month snooker's most famous knights will get together in Peterborough to take part in the second edition of the World Seniors Championship. So, please book the coming weekend (5-6) for it would be a real shame to miss a date with the legends of the sport.

Very quickly we will need to pack our bags and go to the lovely South West Snooker Academy from Gloucester when between 6 and 9 of November the UK Championship qualifiers will take place. Thrilling times for the lads that want to book themselves a place next to the Top 16 players.
And since we are on the "qualifiers" section, I must also add German Masters’ qualifying rounds that will be staged at the World Snooker Academy from Sheffield from November 22 until November 25.

The golden rule is not to be broken, as this month will see a PTC taking place too. Well, two, to be more precise. First we shall travel outside the UK borders to Belgium's Antwerp, where PTC 9 will he hold between 10 and 13 of November, while the next one, PTC 10, will take place right here in Sheffield between 26 and 30 of the current month.

Power Snooker will strike again with Ronnie O'Sullivan being the defending champion, so besides having the fast Premier League rolling, we shall also have an even faster snooker event taking over our TVs between November 19 and 20.

How are the players preparing for Halloween

20:11:00 Ramona Dragomir 2 Comments

The famous Halloween is almost here and the snooker players are, of course, preparing for this event. Although there's no snooker involved the lads have the right to a bit of entertainment, so here's how they've decided to dress up.

First, we have the proud owner of the first ranking position - Mark Selby. The Jester from Leicester is always ready to entertain the crowd, but also ready to step up and make a remarkable comeback into the game. Don't let yourselves fooled by this master of disguise! :-P

Now it's time for the machine! The rising machine that pots one ball after another being almost unstoppable. Well, maybe from time to time he doesn't do justice to himself and doesn't play at his best, but what can I say? We all have our dark times. Let's hear it for the Welsh Potting Machine - Mark Williams!

Always ready to master the laws of magic with his unique magic cue, Shaun Murphy manages to steal one wow after another when he's performing in front of a large crowd. Competitive and ready to travel the world high and low, the Magician is responsible for bringing the superb magic into the crazy snooker world.

But we can’t have too much magic in snooker, so someone has to be the "bad guy", the man that represents the law and the order in the Snooker Kingdom. That man is "The Sherriff of Pottingham" and he's the one that the players must obey.

Every town has its own super hero so snooker has one too in the person of Ronnie O'Sullivan.

Green, fluffy and adorable - here's how nowadays dragons look like. But that's only an appearance, for when the time is right, our Welsh Dragon Matthew Stevens breaths fire and everything in order to get his well deserved victory.

Responsible for flying the private snooker jet, the Captain Ali Carter is always on duty when the situation require a firm hand and a lot of commitment.

He's well known for his unmistakable poker face, but from time to time, when he's lifting a shiny trophy you can see this little but quite powerful Chinese player smile. Ladies and gentlemen, I give you Ding Junhui!

With years of experience in winning fancy tournaments, the Wizard of Wishaw (John Higgins) sits comfortably in his chair and thinks of the next move. Does he go for another world title, or not? I believe he will. ;-)

What would life be without colors? What would snooker be without his colorful character, the Spaceman Dominic Dale? Either he's flying high, or singing at the top of his lungs, Dom is the person that everyone wants to be around ... even when he's singing??? :-))

Not even the CIA or the FBI know what this guy is doing. After he shot the "Shoot-Out" crown at the beginning of this year, the "007 Agent" of snooker, Nigel Bond has became the person most wanted in the snooker world. Still, no one knows where he might be hiding ... do you?

Like Britney Spears would say "He's not a boy, not yet a man", but still he's one hell of a player. With great chances to become the next Super Man of the Snooker Kingdom, here's Judd Trump!!!

He ruled the golden days of snooker but that magical golden sparkle is not lost for good. "The Nugget" Steve Davis is still capable of upsets and to be honest, I'm not surprised, since we are talking about a six-time world champ. Like dhaaaa!!!

There have been occasions when his head was up in the clouds (missing the train, misplacing his passport) so many have been tempted to treat him like a silly little girl. But underneath all that lies the "Thunder from Down Under" and he'll grab any occasion to prove you wrong - here's Neil Robertson!

Returning to our beloved or not so beloved hero, O’Sullivan - SuperMan. Believe it or not, but he's not always a hero, for many have described him as the Frankenstein of snooker. And many have wanted his head off. Still, none prevailed. I wonder why is that? Maybe the fact that when he really wants it he’s a wonderful player has something to do with it ... just sayin' :-P

Saving the best for last, I give you the Master of Snooker - Stephen Hendry! Words don't seem to do him justice, so I'll just say this: May the snooker force be with you Hendry! :-))

Crucible welcomes back Hendry and White

22:03:00 Ramona Dragomir 0 Comments

We still have two more months until the end of this year, but I can't help thinking about the marvellous snooker treats that we'll be spoilt with during the very next year.

If a couple of days ago I was telling you about the new Legends Cup (a snooker event that's part of the Snooker Legends tour; by the way if you didn’t get the chance to read about it, please click here), today I will share another exciting news with you.

It seems like the Crucible will relive one of its biggest moments: to see the seven-time world champion Stephen Hendry taking on the six-time World Championship runner-up Jimmy White. Yes, it's true!

If we were to take a quick walk down to memory lane, we would discover that Hendry and White met for no more than four times in a World Championship final at the Crucible. First time, it was in 1990 when the Scottish player beat Jimmy 18-12 to become the youngest ever snooker champion at just 21.

1992, 1993 and 1994 followed up next, the final line-up being the same: Stephen Hendry on one side and Jimmy White on the other. I guess Jimmy still recalls the '94 defeat when he missed the chance to pun on the world champion crown by being just one frame away (18-17).
And so, after four final confrontations at the Crucible, the magnificent "Whirlwind" has yet to defeat maybe one of his most fearful opponents.

After 18 years from the last World Championship final that the two snooker gladiators played, the Crucible is ready to receive them once more with its arms open wide.
On April 13, 2012 Stephen Hendry and Jimmy White will meet again under the roof of the Sheffield theatre that holds so many incredible memories of the two great players.

The exhibition is produced by Snooker Legends and it will also feature Michaela Tabb as the ref in charge and John Virgo as the tireless master of ceremony and commentator.

Tickets go on sale on November 19  so my advice is to hurry up and grab one for a genuinely  "Crucible Memories" evening, as the event is called.

Box office 0114 249 6000 , or book online At
www.sheffieldtheatres.co.uk

VIP packages are also available for those of you interested in taking a closer glance at the players in action (aka. prime seat) as well as for an entrance to the pre-event Champagne reception where you'll meet the players but also Michaela and JV.
For more information please visit Snooker Legends official website.

So, am I right looking forward to the next year? ;-)

Players team up for Legends Cup

20:48:00 Ramona Dragomir 0 Comments

Each snooker fan has his own favourite player, or maybe even two or three, but when it comes to the legends of this sport the answer is mostly the same: "We love them all!".

The snooker legends are those who have made snooker what it is now, without them many of nowadays players wouldn't even got interested in the sport. They wrote history and some of them are still doing it on the Main Tour. They were responsible for the first maximum breaks, for the first punch-the-air-when-you-win, for the endless days we spent practically glued to the television or stayed patiently on our seats looking directly at them.

When "Snooker Legends Tour" started its journey everyone was excited and so many fans have been able to see, maybe for the first time, the faces of those who rocked around the snooker tables for so many years. A beautiful journey down to memory lane, a lot of laughs, a lot of fans living the dream of shaking the hand of a player that has touched their lives in a very special way.

With snooker breaking so many boundaries lately it is only normal to look towards the future and think of exciting new ways of keeping the sport alive and the fans satisfied. And that's how the man behind the "Snooker Legends Tour", Jason Francis came up with the idea of "Legends Cup".
The legends of the sport and some very heavy names, that are still rocking the snooker business, will team up for a grand event that will definitely bring a lot of joy around the snooker fans.

Did I get your attention?
Good, now let's see what's this all about, shall we?

What is Legends Cup

Basically we will have two teams: England and Northern Ireland on one side and the Rest of the World, on the other.

England and Northern Ireland's team will be carefully lead by Dennis Taylor, as the captain, along with his magnificent line-up: Ronnie O'Sullivan, Jimmy White and John Parrott, while Canada's Cliff Thorburn will take over The Rest of the World team of brilliant and brave soldiers: Stephen Hendry, Ken Doherty and Tony Drago.

The matches will be carefully refereed by Michaela Tabb and "the flying Dutchman of snooker" Jan Verhaas, while John Virgo will continue to delight the audience with his "where's the cue ball going?" commentary.

How the Legends Cup is being played

There will be four sessions. The first three sessions will see two doubles matches and four singles, while the last one is eight singles.
Teams earn one point per match won and the captains will need to delegate their players before each session. No double pairing can be repeated which means that all team members will partner each other once.
The first team to get 18 points is declared the winner.

How the concept was brought to life

Jason Francis had the idea of putting together a Legends Cup for quite some time, while in August 2010, Dennis Taylor was expressing his desire to see a revived Snooker Cup in the pages of Belfast Telegraph, remembering the days when he and his team were winning one tournament after another.
Bingo!

Jason said: "I've always enjoyed the Ryder Cup in Golf and also remember the team world championships in snooker.  I spoke to the players about my ideas during the Legends events and they offered full support to make it happen."

"When Dennis made those comments it was on the back of discussions we had had on tour. Canada had a fantastic team with Cliff, Kirk, Bill and later on Alain but you always felt Ireland lacked the third world class player to join Dennis and Alex, so the fact they won when they did is even more remarkable.  Bear in mind that the England teams with Jimmy, Parrott and a young Ronnie were no push over either!"
"Tony and Ken have done some events before for us and Hendry will appear in some more Snooker Legends events next year. Having Jan Verhass join us is great, but generally our events only need one official so Michaela covers them, it's not a bad alternative though is it! Great guy who I look forward to getting to know even more."

So with a line up that is guaranteed to satisfy even the most pretentious tastes, we should definitely expect a "blast from the past".

The event will take place next year, the weekend after the World Championship, between May 11-13 at the Bedworth Civic Hall in the Midlands so be sure to get your share of team snooker treat. Tickets go on sale on November 4th and you can buy yours here:

Players Tour Championship Event 8 (2011) - Second title for Robertson

01:08:00 Ramona Dragomir 0 Comments

Neil Robertson the 2011 PTC 8 champion
Neil Robertson becomes the second player to ever win two PTC events after Ronnie O'Sullivan. The Australian, who won the 2010 World Championship, defeated the youngster Judd Trump 4-1 to conquer the Alex Higgins International Trophy (aka. Players Tour Championship 8).

If during the first round of this year's World Championship Judd Trump saw out the defending champion, it was only normal to see a "pay-back" at some point. Robertson fond the perfect occasion during this weekend’s PTC 8 from Killarney, Ireland where he hammered the 2011 China Open champion by 4-1.

Neil Robertson started his Irish journey by taking down Gary Wilson 4-1, Tony Drago 4-1 and Joe Jogia 4-0. That's how he ended up in the Last 16 where he met Martin Gould. And by looking at the scoreline (4-0) it seemed he didn't find any trouble in performing a perfect whitewash. No trouble what so ever to score yet another one in the quarter-finals, this time his victim being the PTC 3 champion, Ben Woollaston.

The runner-up, Judd Trump receiving his check

The semi-final was played against Mark Allen and was a toughy. However, the Australian managed to win the deciding frame and get a place in the final.

His opponent Judd Trump was, like him, no stranger from winning a PTC event. And also like him he was potting wonderfully well. That's how, after beating Adam Wicheard 4-3, Andrew Norman 4-2 and Marco Fu 4-0, the Bristol boy secured himself a spot for the Last 16 round.
And after a 4-0 against the "Bulldog" Stephen Lee, a 4-2 in front of the Scot Alan McManus and a 4-1 by playing PTC 4 champion Mark Selby, he ended up on a snooker date with Neil Robertson.

Robbo along with Alex Higgins' sister
The final wasn't what we would call a great one. Lot of misses and lot of wasted chances from both sides. Still, the one who made the most of his own mistakes and surely the ones of his opponent was Robbo.

Although after the first two frames the lads were all square at 1-1, Trump wasn't able to win any more frames after that. With breaks of 76, 39 and 65 Robertson froze the scoreline at 4-1 in his favour.

After winning the PTC 6 in Poland three weeks ago, the "Thunder from Down Under" collects one more title and a very special one if I may add - the Alex Higgins International Trophy.

The next PTC will be held in Belgium at Antwerp between November 10-13.

Players Tour Championship Event 8 (2011) - Day 3

14:35:00 Ramona Dragomir 0 Comments

Ken gets a place in the Last 16
Saturday in Killarney: the perfect way to start a proper weekend and to get yourself a place into the marvellous and most wanted Last 16 round. For eight of the players the dream came true and as you read these lines, they are already fighting genuine cue battle to get a place in the quarter-finals of the Alex Higgins International Trophy (PTC 8) and if they are good and lucky enough maybe go even further than that.

Long time since we saw Ken Doherty making his appearance in the Last 16 (last time it was during PTC 3), but gladly the Irish fans will be able to see him again, as he won all three matches by beating Joe Meara, Ali Carter and Rory McLeod all of them by 4-3.
He will meet Alan McManus in the next round, the Scotsman earning a spot after winning 4-2 over the strategist Dave Harold and hammering Shaun Murphy 4-1.

Judd Trump, playing brilliantly well
Judd Trump seemed to have no problem at all when he booked a place in the Last 16, victories like 4-3 against Adam Wicheard, 4-3 with Andrew Norman and 4-0 in front of Marco Fu speaking for themselves.
It was also the case of the Pink Army soldier, Barry Hawkins whose 4-1 over Craig Steadman, 4-0 with Kurt Maflin and 4-2 with the PTC 5 champion Andrew Higginson got him a place next to the rest of the crew.

The "Bulldog" Stephen Lee got back on track obtaining satisfactory results against Zhang Anda (4-0), Sam Baird (4-0) and Luca Brecel (4-2), while Mark Selby although struggled a bit by the end of the day he successfully managed to beat Alfie Burden 4-1, Graeme Dott 4-0 and Jimmy Robertson 4-3.

And since I mentioned Brecel a few sentences before, I have to say this is quite a good performance for the Belgian prodigy. During this year's series of PTCs the only time he won two matches was in PTC 2. Back then the one who prevented him for going further was Rory McLeod, who beat him in a decider. Still, this a good sign for Luca, both of the victories he cashed yesterday being pretty solid: 4-1 with Nick Jennings and 4-2 with Anthony McGill.

Mark Selby aiming for another win?
But returning to the famous Last 16, China sent an ambassador as well. Yu Delu was the player who whitewashed Jack Lisowski 4-0, beat Andy Hicks 4-2 and ended Adam Duffy's PTC dream with another 4-2.

The first champion of the Australian Goldfields Open, Stuart Bingham, also retained a spot  after winning 4-0 over Alex Taubman and 4-1 over the legend Jimmy White and Ricky Walden.

With Delu and Bingham on board the line-up is set and we can move on to the next phase of the PTC 8.

The second day of the PTC 8, also known as the Alex Higgins International Trophy, brought with it a few surprises, like the fact that the PTC 1 and PTC 7 (aka. the Kay Suzanne Memorial Trophy) champion, Ronnie O'Sullivan was eliminated soon after starting the race, losing 4-1 to the Chinese player Xiao Guodong.

But on a brighter note, Martin Gould and Mark Allen seemed to have found some good form, while Gerard Greene managed to get a place into the Last 16 for the first time since the beginning of this year's PTCs.

The current world champion, the Scot John Higgins, managed to get a spot in the next round by beating Ian Burns 4-1, Nigel Bond 4-2 but also Ashley Wright by the same scoreline, while the 2010 world champion Neil Robertson followed him next after recording a 4-1 in front of Gary Wilson and Tony Drago and a perfect 4-0 against Joe Jogia.

Believe it or not but Mark Allen got a place in the Last 16 round for the first time since the season kicked off, which is strange since we all know what a great player he is. With wins of 4-0 over Paul Davison and Mike Dunn and 4-1 over David Gilbert, the North-Ireland's player secured his future in the tournament.

Mark Allen reaches the Last 16
Another Pink Army soldier was soon to repeat the performance of reaching the famous Last 16, Gerard Greene winning two tough battles against Sam Craigie and Fergal O'Brien 4-3 and defeating another dangerous opponent in his last match, Xiao Guodong by 4-2.

It was good to see Martin Gould playing at his best, the Englishman using scorelines like 4-1 in the match played against Gareth Allen, 4-2 in front of the "Iceman" Jamie Burnett and ending on an even higher note: a perfect 4-0 against Jamie Jones.
A bit more revived, Ryan Day followed his snooker colleagues into the Last 16 after obtaining victories of 4-2 over John Torpey, 4-1 against Liu Song and 4-0 in front of Mark Joyce, but also after hitting the highest break of the tournament, a beautiful 142 in his second match.

Gouldie back in business
The Thai Dechawat Poomjaeng wrote history last night in Ireland after he successfully managed to get a place into the Last 16 round for the first time ever. He came very close to reach this goal during PTC 1 and 5, but he would always lose the last match. Not last evening!

He started his journey through the balls with a tight 4-3 victory in front of Jordan Brown, continued by hammering the master Stephen  Hendry 4-1, only to end his day by taking down another Scotsman, this time his victim being Stephen Maguire whom he beat 4-2.

Dechawat Poomjaeng writes history
Last match of the day was the one that saw Ben Woollaston getting the last of the Last 16 round spots. The PTC 3 champion defeated Liang Wenbo 4-2, Liam Highfield 4-3 and former 2010 PTC champion, Tom Ford by repeating the last scoreline.
